Be Seen or Stay Hidden? What Jesus Really Meant About Good Works | Matthew 6:1–4

Jesus says, “Let your light shine before people” — and then, just a few verses later, He says, “Take care not to practice your righteousness in the sight of people.”
So which is it?

Be seen… or don’t be seen?
In Matthew 6:1–4, Jesus exposes the subtle danger of self-righteousness and asks a deeper question: Who are you performing for?

As Jesus addresses giving, He reveals that the issue isn’t simply what we do, but who our righteousness is aimed at. The same good work can either point people toward God or point them toward us.

In this message, we explore three truths:

1. The Kingdom asks, “Who are you performing for?”Our righteousness is meant to make the Father visible, not ourselves. Like a window rather than a mirror, our good works should point beyond us to Him.

2. You get what you aim at.Jesus says that those who seek the applause of people “have their reward in full.” But when we aim our righteousness toward the Father, we discover that He is the One who sees what is done in secret — and He rewards those who seek Him.

3. Lose yourself in righteousness.“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” isn’t merely a technique for keeping our giving secret. Jesus is describing a righteousness so captivated by the person in front of us that we stop thinking about ourselves altogether.
The goal isn’t to become invisible. The goal is to make Him visible.

True righteousness isn’t about whether people see what we do. It’s about who receives the glory when they do.
